ABOUT “STREET MUSIC”

Street Music is a recent duo for violin and cello, commissioned by my friend, violinist Piotr Szewczyk. This is a bluesy toccata, a relentless driving statement of layered patterns. My street musicians are not just entertaining passersby; they are shouting out and dancing with a manic exuberant energy for the sheer fun of it. Who says classical music isn’t fun?!

ABOUT “OLD MAN RIVER”

Even as a child I loved the venerable tradition of solo jazz piano. My version of this hit song from Jerome Kern’s “Showboat” (1927) stresses the bluesy side on the lyrical original.

ABOUT “NAIMA”

This is solo piano rendition of the John Coltrane ballade from the 1950's. My mentor Gunther Schuller often talked about "third stream" music. It involved mixing materials, techniques and "styles". This is a jazz standard played with a 19th cen. romantic inflection. It's not an experiment. This is my way of playing the tune and it feels honest, righteous and complete to me.
